Most people's impression of a country often comes from its most famous city: when you think of Australia, the first thing that comes to mind is the Sydney Opera House; when you think of the UAE, you think of Dubai's skyscrapers; when you think of Turkey, you first think of Istanbul, which straddles Europe and Asia. Many countries don't just consider a city's fame and economic size when choosing its capital. Obscure, Unheard-of "Hidden Capitals"

If you could guess the easily confused capitals above using common sense, the following obscure capitals might even stump even seasoned geography enthusiasts.

Abuja, Nigeria, is a prime example. Many people's impression of the country is still that of the old capital, Lagos. However, Nigeria moved its capital to Abuja, located in the country's center, back in 1991, yet many people are still unaware of its existence.

There are also some smaller countries whose capitals are ridiculously obscure: Njirumud, Palau, only moved from Koror in 2006, and the entire city has only a few hundred residents; few people worldwide have heard of this name. Kitga, Burundi, only replaced Bujumbura as the capital in 2019, and most people's geography textbooks haven't been updated to this information yet. Sri Jayawadna Prakot, Sri Lanka's capital, has a name so long that no one can pronounce it correctly; most people still habitually assume Colombo is the capital.
